Using the new science of Positive Psychology to maximise your potential for fulfillment and success

Positive Psychology is a new scientific branch of Psychology which is based on the realisation that traditional Psychology has until now overemphasized the exploration of human disorders and weaknesses. Instead of aiming to relieve human suffering, Positive Psychologists now study how we can get the most out of our lives: How can we develop positive emotions, character strengths and institutions in order to allow people to thrive and flourish?

The aim of this talk is to help you apply the findings of Positive Psychology to transform yourself, your business and your community.

"We can live out the vision that life and work can be about building what is best and highest, not just about correcting weaknesses"

The IMC Conference - Final offering confirmed!
Issued by: Living Your Brand

So we've all been to some seriously yawn-inducing marketing conferences, but that's not how marketing conferences need to be! They can be (and really should be) exciting, intellectually stimulating, motivating, networking goldmines, and anything but a waste of time. The global marketing arena demands continuous trend evolution and constant innovation in order for companies to remain relevant. So it is with this understanding that Living Your Brand presents the Integrated Marketing Communication Conference, taking place on the 15th and 16th October 2012 at the lavish Hilton Hotel in Sandton Johannesburg.

“Tax proposals to assist business rescue regime and other relevant corporate tax issues"

UCT Graduate School of Business in association with Mazars and Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is proud to present:
Di Seccombe, National Head of Tax training and Presentations with Mazars

who will address us on:
“Tax proposals to assist business rescue regime and other relevant corporate tax issues"
The head of SARS, Oupa Magashule, has acknowledged before Parliament's standing committee on finance that the low level of tax compliance by companies is "less than satisfactory”.
The newly promulgated Tax Administration Act includes provisions whereby financial managers and shareholders may be held liable for the tax debts of a company and greatly increases the ability SARS has to access information in respect of a company, its employees and shareholders.
Companies battling to stay afloat and entering into a business rescue plan find themselves penalised from a tax perspective.
Join us for a discussion that will focus on the above issues, and the highly anticipated proposals set out in the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2012 aimed at reducing the negative tax consequences of the reduction of debt for less than its full value to assist taxpayers entering into a business rescue.

Absa launches first SME Index in banking sector

Absa has gone a step further by launching the Absa SME Index aimed at providing valuable information on the current state of SMEs in the country and the level and challenges of employment in South Africa.

The financial services group has already demonstrated its commitment to the growth and development of small and media sized enterprises through the launch of its dedicated unit for Enterprise Development in 2011. Since then, Absa has been working on identifying useful tools and sources of information that would help with the development of SMEs and the creation of much needed jobs in South Africa.
The Absa SME Index data is extrapolated from Statistics South Africa’s information on various economic indicators that are issued regularly.

Absa Group’s Chief Executive for Retail and Business Banking (RBB) Bobby Malabie says with the data collected to measure the number of people that have been employed by companies versus the unemployment figures in the country over the last two decades, it’s quite evident that unemployment remains one of South Africa’s key challenges into the foreseeable future.

“This is especially rife in the youth category where unemployment is as high as 50% and its clearly unsustainable taking into consideration that we have 15 million people on social welfare, but only 7 million are taxpayers,” says Malabie.

The Absa SME Index also shows that while only about 270 000 out of the more than 1,9 million businesses employ five or more employees other than the owner, only 10% of those businesses employ more than 50 employees and that is less than 4% of all employees.

Mr Malabie says while it may be easy to say we need more businesses to employ more people, unfortunately there has been a consolidation of businesses (mergers, and partnerships) while others have been forced to close down due to high operating costs and other economic pressures.

“The Absa SME Index will provide valuable information that allows SMEs to make better and informed decisions with access to solid and reliable information that will help them to grow their businesses. The Absa SME index will also allow policy makers to make relevant policy decisions on SME development, high unemployment and job creation,’ he adds.

Economist Mike Schussler who worked on the Absa SME Index in partnership with Absa says the idea of the index is that one will get a quick overview from just one index on how SMEs are fairing.
Schussler notes with the latest data of the index that the Absa SME Index has dropped to its lowest level in 18 months as businesses feel the uncertainty that the cold winds of the world economy is bringing into South Africa.

We know that now days there are many more media opportunities.
So to make life a bit simple let us unravel the mystery of networking. We will briefly cover:

Xtraordinary Women in Business Networking Session

Topic: The seven sins of e-mail marketing

E-mail is downright the best monetisation strategy for all online marketing. No other technique (social media, SEO, paid ads, etc.) comes close to the conversation rates from visit to sale of e-mails. Are you leaving money on the table by not harnessing the power of efficient e-mail marketing?

Any kind of inbound marketing (getting found by your leads vs. having to chase them) will always involve sending e-mails to a group of people who are interested to hear from you and who are looking forward to receiving your mails. Unfortunately too many people do not know how to do e-mail marketing the right way and are wasting a lot of time, not to mention losing sales opportunities and, even worse, all too often look like spammers.

How safe is your Business against legal actions?

How safe is your Business against legal actions?

An understanding of the Law is essential for business success.  Too many SMEs fail because the owners, directors or managers have little or no knowledge of business law, risk and compliance and do not realise how critical it is to utilise the Law to support business success.

SIRDAR presents a talk by George Zacharias, Sirdar Legal Associate and Attorney of the High Court, “SIRDAR Legal:  The Law and SMEs” where he outlines both the dangers of not utilising the law as well as the benefits of having a law program in place from day one of your business.

What must you understand about the law to ensure your success as an SME? What new developments within the legal environment do you need to be aware of?

What separates successful business owners from those who merely own a job in their own business?

While many business owners aspire for explosive growth, only a few recognize the critical distinctions of success or have the entrepreneurial guidance to ever make it happen.

Some business owners end up ?owning a job? in their business, while others manage to build and grow successful enterprises that create wealth while enjoying every moment of it.

Australia South Africa Business Association (ASABA), Networking lunch Wednesday 20th June 2012: South African Infrastructure Development Implications for mining, minerals processing and economic growth

ASABA is pleased to announce that its second networking lunch will take place at Sydney’s The Four Seasons Hotel on the Park on Wednesday, June 20th 2012. The lunch will feature a discussion on a subject that is critical to our resource based economies. The economic fortunes of both Australia and South Africa are underwritten by the mining and export of commodities such as iron ore and coal. However, in both countries the contribution of resource booms is constrained by the capacity of supporting infrastructure – power generators, rail links, roads, export terminals and ports. Both countries have had to urgently address infrastructure backlogs.

We are delighted to have two expert speakers to lead a discussion and exchange of ideas on this critical issue, Dr Stephen Labson, Managing Director, slEconomics, and Robert Milbourne, Partner, Norton Rose, both of whom have extensive experience working in the resource and infrastructure sectors in Australia and South Africa.

Beyond what promises to be a lively and informative discussion, the lunch is an opportunity to meet and talk with like minded people with common business interests in Australia and South Africa. At ASABA we are committed to making our networking events both enjoyable and productive, providing forums for making new contacts and exchanging ideas in a relaxed and trusted environment. The lunch will be attended by senior business leaders. We look forward to seeing you there.

Networking: Making Strong Connections

Networking: Making Strong Connections

By Linda Germishuizen
(MA Clin Psych) Executive, Career and Life Coach

When you have your own business you need to be alert to clues the whole time: these could be about new products, new needs or new markets. Expanding your network of contacts is one of the key building blocks to a successful business. A network provides support, opens doors to experts or trusted advisors and most importantly to new business opportunities.

The word “network” makes some people freeze! The important point to remember though is that other people are just strangers, so if you somehow “fail” to connect with them, they will be unaware of the situation. Only you will be. So there is little to lose!

Firstly, you need to be patient and take time to build up solid connections. Networking is not about getting to know as many people as you can and just “using” them. These day’s people are becoming more sensitive to the nature of their relationships.

They can sense when someone is not being genuine and trying to “butter them up” to sign a deal or to obtain information. If you want to stay in business in the long term, your focus needs to be on developing long term, lasting relationships. Rudy Giuliani (ex-Mayor of New York) appointed people whom he had met many years earlier, in key positions. He had known people for years and had experience of their competence as well as their values i.e. were they trustworthy?

So the question you now ask is: “How do I go about expanding my network?”
You need to be patient and take time to build up a solid network. How do you start?
  1. Remember people: Clearly you need to remember the names of your new contacts. Following this you need to register details e.g. what are their passions, their interests, what did they talk about that you noted?
  2. Make yourself memorable: Look for ways in which you can refresh your contacts, do small favours or offer help. Stay in touch either through calls or emails.
There are also certain character traits you need to develop:
  1. Courage: smile when with strangers, greet in a friendly and natural way and introduce yourself. Find some way of making contact.
  2. Curiosity: have the attitude that you can learn something from every person you meet. So ask questions, listen carefully and be interested in what they are sharing.
  3. Enthusiasm: show that you are fully present and giving them your full attention. After a while make sure though that you move around and meet other people as well, as opposed to sticking to one person. You can either excuse yourself, or introduce the person you are chatting to, to someone else.
  4. Being authentic: be “real” and yourself in the way you communicate. People are looking for “genuine” interactions, not relationships that are filled with bravado, ego and masks of superiority. The world is slowly shifting to relating human to human not pretense to pretense.

At some time during the interaction, make a mental note or two about the person to whom you chatted. You may even want to write a few lines in a small notebook or on the back of the business card they gave you. This will help you remember some of the details of your conversation for future reference. Get to know your new contacts better through looking for ways to meet again. Pass useful information or names of people you know on to your “new” contact.

Just a last point – get to know people in each decade i.e. kids under 10, teenagers, young people in the 20s, the 30 somethings, the 40 plus, etc, all the way up to 80 plus. This way you will stay in touch with what is relevant in each phase of life. You will be amazed at what unexpected gifts you will receive in this way!
