SPEAKER PROFILE

Brian has had a long academic career at the University of Cape Town. He was a Junior Lecturer in 1964, Lecturer 1968, Senior Lecturer 1971 and appointed Professor of Economics in 1981. He was head of the Economics Department 1986-1990 and Dean, Faculty of Commerce, UCT, 1997-2001.

He attended the London School of Economics as a graduate student 1966-7 and as an Academic Visitor 1974. He has been a visiting professor at the Carnegie –Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa USA (1979-9) and at Columbia University, New York, 1994. Brian is currently Professor Emeritus, University of Cape Town and Investment Strategist and Economist, Investec Private Securities, Investec Bank. In the course of his career he served, inter-alia, as a member of the Competition Board (1983- 1989) take out space before 1989) and as an adviser to the Margo Commission on Tax Reform in South Africa (1986)

He has consulted to a number of SA companies, including Volkswagen (SA) Ltd, Rightford, Searle Tripp, and Makin (later Ogilvy Mather SA) BMW SA, Investec Securities and also Investec Bank since its founding. He has consulted to the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis (1979) and Smith Barney, Stock Brokers, New York 1994-1997. He has worked with GT fund managers in Hong Kong (1986) and also with the Fraser Institution, Vancouver, Canada. He has written a column for the Financial Mail since 1981 and served as a member of its Board of Economists for many years. He has been a FM rated investment analyst since 1991.

He was the founding Chairman of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront (Pty) Ltd leading that company and the redevelopment of Cape Town’s historic harbour from 1988 to 2001. He is currently the chairman of Acucap Properties Ltd- a loan stock company listed on the JSE in March 2002.

Brian’s academic interests and publications have focused on Monetary and Financial Economics and he has published frequently and widely in the field. Perhaps his most influential work was “Rational Expectations and Economic Thought”, Journal of Economic Literature September 1979, was translated into Japanese and Spanish. He has written two books, South African Economic Issues, (Juta) Cape Town, 1982 and Understanding Capitalism, (Boyers-Bowerdean) New York- London, 1996. His recent academic publications include: Evaluating Performances at the 2007 Cricket World Cup with GDI Barr and CG Holdsworth, South African Statistics Journal (2008) 42, 125-142; The effect of the rand exchange rate on the JSE Top-40 stocks – An analysis for the practitioner, with GDI Barr and CG Holdsworth S.Afr.J.Bus.Manage.2007,38(1); Portfolio Strategies for hedging against Rand weakness with GDI Barr and CG Holdsworth South African Journal of Accounting Research, 2007,21(1).
