Power Hour in March and April 2014

Sandton – 10 April 2014
Using ETFs for local and global investing

Passive investing is a strategy in which an investor invests in accordance with a pre-determined strategy that doesn't entail any forecasting. The idea is to minimize investing fees and to avoid the adverse consequences of failing to correctly anticipate the future, and with that, reduce the pitfalls associated with fear and greed.

The best way to implement a passive investment strategy is to use JSE listed Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) as it offers you investments into a broad range of asset classes, equity sectors, international geographies and more, which allow you to construct a portfolio to suit your specific risk appetite. In addition, ETFs offer the dual benefit of the liquidity of the stock exchange combined with the structural safety net of unit trusts (collective investment schemes). Importantly passive investing is not about modest returns as in many cases ETFs outperform unit trusts that have a similar risk profile and investment mandate, especially after costs are taken into account.

Since the launch of South Africa's first ETF in November 2000 we have seen an explosion in this space as investors flock to the benefits and rewards of passive investing as they become the corner stone of any investment portfolio. There are currently 38 ETFs available on the JSE, and a further 28 ETNs (Exchange Traded Notes) that offer exposure to currencies, commodities and less liquid international markets.

Nerina Visser (Head: BETA Solutions at Nedbank Capital) will present on the concept and benefits of passive investing as well as introduce Nedbank Capital's two ETFs - the BettaBeta Be Green ETF and the BettaBeta Equally Weighted Top 40 ETF.
