Breaking the Mould 13th Annual National Conference in Durban

EAPA-SA will be hosting the 13th Annual National Conference in Durban at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel and Conference Centre from 21 to 23 September 2011 – under the theme “Breaking the Mould”, which will explore new ideas and interventions in the field of employee assistance and wellness. The conference expects to host over 250 Employee Assistance and wellness professionals, service providers and industry experts from around the country.


The conference will afford delegates an opportunity to engage with industry experts, fellow professionals and service providers as well as to take a load off with the self - care activities, incorporating your own work/life balance. Nearly 900 delegates have attended the conferences over the last five years. In addition to the main conference activities, EAPA-SA will also be offering pre-conference training on select topics, thereby providing individuals with the opportunity to further expand their knowledge and insight.

EA professionals, EA Industry providers and Organization Managers can expect this year to explore Distance Counseling, Complementary and Alternative Interventions, Resilience and Proactive Interventions, Spiritual Care and Interfaith programmes, Chronic Pain and addiction, Incapacity Management, Sport and Recreation, Embedded/ free EAPs, Generational Differences, understanding Engagement amongst other exciting themes. The conference will also be taking a closer look at South African research.

The conference will also provide the opportunity for delegates to see what work is being carried out by the regional Chapters of EAPA-SA across the country. Through liaising with the Chapter representatives, delegates will be able to determine in what activities they could become involved and understand the full benefit of being a member of EAPA-SA.

The Presidential Awards Gala Dinner will be held on Friday 23 September where the new EAPA-SA board will be announced for the period of September 2011 to September 2013, and prestigious awards given to top-performing members. Awards include the EAP Practitioner of the Year (the recipient will be enrolled at the University of Pretoria for the Short Course in EAPs or the Advanced Short Course in EAPs plus a R2,000.00 cash prize); and the Chapter of the Year will receive R3,000.00 to supplement their activities.

Themes and topics to be discussed include positioning employee assistance and wellness programmes in the changing world of work; aligning activities with the shift in community/workplace consciousness; redesigning and redefining employee assistance and wellness programmes, making it relevant in current practice and expectations; and reworking the shift in the workforce’s collective consciousness; as well as new issues affecting the role and contribution of the different professions and occupations in employee assistance and wellness services.

Delegates will also be motivated by one of the international speakers, Jeffrey Christie from Houston, Texas, who is the President of EAPA. His visit to South Africa will emphasise the importance of ethics to be promoted and maintained in the field of EAP and re-enforce the collaboration between EAPA-SA and EAPA – internationally.
